She felt it. Everything was slipping away.
They saved their city from destruction and fought gods. And yet, in a few moments, it would all be over.
For her at least, but not for him.
Tav’s frail form could barely lift her head as the love of her life—still eternally young and beautiful—held her close. They had spent the last several years lurking in the shadows. And now, she could finally feel the morning creeping into her senses, like a warm blanket—a feeling she hadn’t felt in years.
But it was all worth it.
They lived their lives—on their terms. And it was a choice they made together, working to overwrite the memories of their past with the joys of the present.
They risked so much for what they had, and would do it all again.
“The sun will be up soon, my love.” Astarion whispered as he cradled her head in the crook of his arm.
A tear rolled down her cheek as she smiled back at him. “You don’t have to do this. You can go, and leave me here.”
He pulled her in and kissed her on the forehead. “Absolutely not. I already told you. I would rather live one life with you than spend a thousand more wandering this world alone.”
She sobbed. “I’m sorry… I’m so sorry that we couldn’t find a way to…”
“Don’t be.” He smiled. “The hope it gave me… that it gave us. It meant something, truly. But…” Even though her eyes had begun to go cloudy with age, she knew there were tears. She could hear him—feel him. “… I could have gone to live anywhere. Do you know why I really stayed?”
Tav closed her eyes as Astarion brushed the hair from her face—one last time.
“It was for you, my love.” His voice shook as he turned his gaze up at the sunrise. “You were there for me through everything, even when I was at my worst. You believed I could be better, even when I didn’t. I know I never told you this enough darling, but… I love you. And if this is how I have to go…”
Astarion closed his eyes. He felt the warmth of the sun on his skin as everything slipped away.
It would all be worth it.
